Samaria Europe`s longest gorge

It stretches from the high mountain Lefka Ori (White Mountains) and 16 kilometres down to the south coast. It leads you through a fascinating landscape, with wild flowers and vegetation.

Starting at the summit (Xiloskalo) there is a breathtaking view over one of Europe’s most popular national parks. Walking down into the valley you will come to a rocky area, and after few hours walk you will reach the famous Iron gate which is only 3 meters wide.

On last part of the trip you will smell the Libyan ocean and you will finally reach the beautiful isolated village Agia Roumeli . This is the reward for your trip through the valley of beautiness. A refreshing swim in the Libyan sea and right after, a nice lunch at the local taverna.

The only way to reach Agia Roumeli is by foot or boat. Some people have discovered their dream destination, and come back year after year. Here is no cars, no noise, absolutely peaceful. The village has only a few accommodations to offer which arevery popular among the tourists. So never mind if you are being to Greek and miss the last boat.

You will find a lot of travel agencies who offer organised trip to explore Samaria Gorge. Another way is to go by yourself by local bus to Xyloskala (Omalos ). There is boat connection between Agia roumeli and Chora Sfakia. From Chora Sfakia you will find bus connections to Chania – Rethymno .- Heraklion .

The season to visit Samaria starts in early may and closes in October. We strongly recommend you not to go walking in the Gorge, by yourself in the high season, when temperature levels are high. There are guided tours during the summer months, which we highly reccomend.

There is tourist pavilion at beginning point at Xyloskala where you can find information

Contact your local travel agency for information, and don’t forget a lot of water and some good walking shoes.

Trip duration: 4- 6 hours

Distance from Chania 42 km
