Ammoudara

Situated about 4km west from Heraklion it is the nearest beach to the city, the beach is long and wide and sandy, and you can normally find a good spot to sunbathe. The nightlife in Ammoudara entices tourist and residents alike.

Vori

This unspoiled village with its small white washed houses surrounding the village square, houses the Museum of Cretan Ethnology. Exhibits show includes old implements and beautiful weavings and wicker furniture. A guide is available for a small fee. Tavernas can be found around the main square.

Ano Viannos

Lies 65km to the south of Heraklion, this is a beautiful village on the southern slope of Mt. Dikti. Walking up the cobbled streets lead to lanes covered with flowers, at the top of the village you are rewarded with spectacular views over the region. There is a Folklore Museum with exhibits of colorful costumes, instruments and weavings.

Arvi

The village is 4km east of Ano Viannos, the village gets only a few visitors. The village is surrounded by cliffs and that makes a natural sun-trap. Bananas grow in abundance here. The beach is sandy and pebbly; there are a few places to stay for visitors who seek a more relaxed holiday.

Zaros

Famed for its bottled water Zaros lays 46km south of Heraklion. The Minions and the Romans settled here due to the supply of fresh spring water. Besides the bottling plant which you can visit, there are many monasteries to visit and villages up in the hills waiting to be explored.
